Silicones & Cell Growth

Silicone rubber sheeting is offering the researcher a valuable laboratory tools in the continuing effort to grow human cells outside the body. The sheeting allows cell growth outside the body with duplication of the environment inside the body.

Cells will not grow with direct contact to silicone rubber, but by depositing a protein layer on the silicone, cells will attach to this layer of protein and grow. The ability to stretch the elastic silicone rubber allows for systems to be built that replicate the dynamic forces that cells see in the human body.

The ability of silicone rubber to transmit CO2, O2 and N2 across a membrane has been well documented in research literature. This physical characteristic of silicone rubber allows the researcher to construct “artificial lungs” for cell growth systems which replenished O2 to the cells and removes CO2 from the cells.

The biological inertness of silicone rubber assures a non-toxic environment for the growth of cells.

We can provide silicone rubber sheeting and tubing for research studies of human cell growth.
